Nose & Throat Conditions Treated at Michigan Avenue ENT include:

Allergic Rhinitis

There’s no need to suffer from seasonal or year-round allergies and the itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and other symptoms that accompany the condition. Brought on by a variety of environmental factors (dust, pollen, animal dander or mold), allergic rhinitis (commonly referred to as hay fever or seasonal allergies) is often treated by antihistamine medications. However, more severe and prolonged cases should be addressed by a qualified ENT, who will evaluate your medical history and thoroughly examine your nasal passages.

Chronic Sinus Infections

One of the more common ailments treated at Michigan Avenue ENT is that of chronic sinus infections. This inflammation of the nasal passages, brought on by infections or the growth of nasal polyps in the sinus cavity, can cause a high level of discomfort in patients but treatment options are available. If you are experiencing discolored discharge from the nose, postnasal drainage in the back of the throat, difficulty breathing through your nose, or pain, tenderness or swelling in your eyes, nose or forehead, it’s time to schedule an appointment with an ENT.

Chronic Stuffy Nose

Often caused by a cold, the flu, allergies or sinus infections, the nose drips associated with a chronic stuffy nose can be both frustrating and annoying. While there are preventative measures that can be taken (using a humidifier, staying hydrated, etc) many people experiencing a stuffy nose tend to self-medicate with over-the-counter decongestants, antihistamines and allergy medicines. If you’re experiencing what can only be defined as a chronic stuffy nose, and over the counter medications aren’t working, consider scheduling an appointment with Michigan Avenue ENT.

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

One of the more common plastic surgery procedures, cosmetic rhinoplasty (different from reconstructive rhinoplasty) is focused on improving the appearance of the nose. The benefits of this nasal surgery are well documented (a better-proportioned face and more attractive appearance in general), but require a skilled and experienced surgeon like those you’ll find at Michigan Avenue ENT.

Deviated Septum

When the thin wall between nasal passages is displaced or off-center (commonly known as a deviated septum), a blockage can occur and difficulty in breathing can result. Symptoms of a deviated septum may include dry nasal canals, nosebleeds, and facial pains, in addition to noisy breathing during sleep. If you are experiencing frequent nosebleeds or recurring sinus infections, consider visiting the offices of Michigan Avenue ENT for a comprehensive evaluation.

Enlarged Tonsils

A common condition among children is enlarged tonsils. Causing a range of symptoms including snoring, strained breathing, frequent colds, and in some severe cases a stoppage in breathing while asleep, the condition can be painful. If not treated, enlarged tonsils result in narrow air passageways and may require significant medical intervention.

Head & Neck Cancer Screening

ENT doctors deal with more than just your regular stuffy nose but far more serious health conditions as well. The team at Michigan Avenue ENT can also conduct head and neck cancer screenings to identify and locate tumors in nasal passages, sinuses, and salivary and thyroid glands among others.

Recurrent Sinusitis

If you have experienced four or more sinus related issues in the past year (without symptoms in between) you may have a condition known as recurrent sinusitis. Should this match your current condition, schedule an appointment with Michigan Avenue ENT; you’ll receive a thorough evaluation to determine if you are predisposed to bacterial infections in the sinus cavity and receive a treatment plan that works for you.

Sleep Apnea

One of the more serious disorders treated at our facility is that of sleep apnea, a sleep disorder in which breathing stops and starts repeatedly. While treatable by a qualified medical professional, lab tests or imaging are often required, so scheduling an appointment with our ENT doctors in Chicago is the best course of action. While age is often a factor for those experiencing sleep apnea, lifestyle changes such as weight loss may be required in addition to the use of a continuous positive airway pressure machine (CPAP).

Snoring

An incredibly common condition, snoring occurs when breathing is partially obstructed while sleeping. While it can signal serious underlying health issues like sleep apnea, more likely causes include nasal congestion, a deviated septum (or some anatomic variation of the nose or soft palate), or other factors including weight (obesity) or even the consumption of alcohol. To find out the reason for your snoring, or the snoring of your loved one, schedule an appointment with Michigan Avenue ENT.

Turbinate Hypertrophy

A condition where the nasal turbinates (the passageways that warm and moisten the air as they flow through the nose) are too large and block airflow, Turbinate Hypertrophy can be diagnosed and treated at Michigan Avenue ENT. Symptoms, which can mimic those of the common cold, may include an altered sense of smell, runny nose, forehead pressure and mild facial pain among others. While medications and at-home treatments can be effective, a simple outpatient surgical procedure can provide lasting relief.
